Post-Graduate Student Conference

By Centre of Yoga Studies|April 30, 2021|Uncategorized|0 comments

Here at the SOAS Centre of Yoga Studies it is our remit to promote, support and share great research happening in the field of Yoga Studies. We know that our audience is interested in the latest, most exciting work and how it’s done. We also know that it can be hard for graduate students in particular to find knowledgeable, supportive audiences with which to share their work.

With this in mind we are very excited to announce that from 28th June – 9th July, 2021, we will be hosting a post-graduate student conference online. We are looking for graduate and post-graduate students who have either nearly completed their Master’s dissertation, or are in the early stages of their doctoral thesis, and are ready to offer a paper introducing the research to a wider audience. This does not have to be your first time giving an academic paper, but it will be a welcoming space for those who are in that position.

Each successful applicant will deliver a 15 minute paper as part of a panel to an online audience. The conference is timed to coincide with our 2021 summer school – so students attending this course will also have the opportunity be part of the audience. Each panel will be moderated, and the series will end with a round table to discuss and reflect upon the emerging themes of the series, and the future of Yoga Studies research as represented by early career researchers.

Our moderators for the series will be: Prof. James Mallinson from SOAS, Dr. Daniela Bevilacqua from the Hatha Yoga Project, Borayin Maitreya Larios from the University of Vienna, and Dr. Theo Wildcroft from SOAS.

Practicalities

24th May: this is our deadline for applications. Submit a title and abstract (max 250 words) for your proposed paper to cys@soas.ac.uk with the subject: “ENTRY: Post-Graduate student conference” and including your name, your academic institution, and whether you are currently a graduate (MA, MSc, etc) or post-graduate (PhD, EdD, etc) student. We welcome topics from any discipline that relates to the academic study of yoga, including but not limited to philology, anthropology, sociology, history of art and health sciences.

4th June: We will notify successful applicants.

14th June: There will be an optional (and free) workshop particularly for MA students who have not presented a paper in an academic situation previously, giving you tips and support for how to write and present this well.

The online panels will run Mondays and Wednesdays, from 28th June – 7th July, 2021, with a round table on Friday 9th July to end. Each session will be 7 – 8.15pm UK time. Successful applicants must be available to present their papers live on this occasion.
