We have an exciting offer of a free trial to the FO Files for India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan for the period 1947-1980

Many departments, students and researchers will find this digital archive relevant and resourceful for a number of subject disciplines, including History, Politics, Development Studies, Economics, Near Middle Eastern Studies (Afghanistan), South East Asian Studies (Burma) and South Asian Studies.
Access is from this link: www.archivesdirect.amdigital.co.uk/FO_India. When off site please select the ‘UK Access Management Federation’ link on the right hand side. Then you need to type in SOAS as the institute, this will take you to the SOAS username and password page. The resource will be available to you for the next four weeks (sending on the 05/06/2015).
The files comprise three separate collections these are:
  • Foreign Office Files for India, Pakistan and Afghanistan, 1947-1964
  • Foreign Office Files for India, Pakistan and Afghanistan, 1965-1971
  • Foreign Office Files for India, Pakistan and Afghanistan, 1972-1980

Events covered include independence and partition, the Indian annexation of Hyderabad and Goa, war between India and Pakistan, tensions and war between India and China, the consolidation of power of the Congress Party in India, military rule in Pakistan, the turbulent independence of Bangladesh and the development of nuclear weapons in the region.
