SOAS University of London

Welcome to the blog page for the South East Asia Section of the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics at SOAS University of London. SOAS is the only university in the UK with a department focusing solely on the languages and cultures of South East Asia. Our aim on this blog is to publish information about the activities of staff and students of the department past and present. Our regualr posts will include reports on current research being undertaken by academic staff, about the experiences of our students  here at SOAS and when they travel to the region, the career paths of past students, recent South East Asia-related events that have taken place in SOAS and nearby, and entries by visiting scholars and researchers who are spending some time with us here at SOAS.

South East Asian Studies has been at the heart of SOAS since it was founded almost a hundred year ago. While the specific research interests of staff and students in the department has changed over the years, a dedication to linguistic and cultural fluency as being at the heart of study of the region remains a constant. Today we offer programmes of study in Burmese, Indonesian, Thai and Vietnamese, and also offer some teaching in Khmer. Staff research interests include the literatures, cinema, languages and cultural traditions of the region. Every year we welcome undergraduates, postgraduate masters students and PhD students, keen to join us in our study of this fascinating part of the world. If you want to know more about the degree programmes we offer, take a look at our department webpage.
We hope that you’ll enjoy the entries, tell friends and colleagues about our blog, comment when you have something to contribute, and get in touch if there is anything else you’d like to know about us, our research or our programmes.
