Job opportunity: Research officer, Nairobi (6 months)

Sahan Africa Limited is recruiting a Research Officer to support the work of the Research and Evidence Facility, a research consortium commissioned by the European Union Trust Fund (EUTF) for Africa to conduct policy-relevant research on migration and conflict in the Horn of Africa. The Research and Evidence Facility is a consortium of Sahan, SOAS, University of London and the University of Manchester.

The Research Officer is tasked with the design of research projects, development of research tools including survey questionnaires and qualitative research guides, arranging logistics for research teams, managing research data, and writing and editing of research reports.

The Research Officer will be based in Nairobi with some travel in the region. The Research Officer will report to the Senior Research Coordinator (based at Sahan) for day to-day matters and the REF Team Leader (based at SOAS) overall.

Key tasks

  • Develop research project terms of reference
  • Develop project budgets for research to be undertaken
  • Develop research tools including quantitative and qualitative questionnaires and research guides relevant to each project
  • Participate in the recruitment and training of researchers for individual projects; such training will be held in the Horn of Africa
  • Prepare documents for securing ethical approval for all research activities related to the project
  • Writing, either as sole or co-author, research outputs including reports, policy briefs, blogs, and bespoke presentations
  • Support in preparing for a major international conference, to be held in Nairobi in June 2022 Conduct interviews with key national and international stakeholders relevant to migration and development related research
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with all Research and Evidence Facility team members at SOAS, University of London, the University of Manchester, and Sahan. Contribute to the advocacy work of the REF through liaising with EU Delegation staff and participating in advocacy and dissemination activities.

The above list of job duties is not exclusive or exhaustive and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.

Required Competencies

  • Master’s Degree in a field relevant to migration, conflict, development or in the social sciences
  • At least 3 to 5 years of experience in research coordination, including onboarding and managing researchers, supporting logistics and operations and any other related tasks for completion of research projects
  • Experience in research ethics and processes, including designing instruments, managing workplans and budgets, supporting data collection and ensuring timely submission of deliverables
  • Good understanding of the social, economic and political context of the Horn of Africa
  • Demonstrable skills in writing and editing research outputs
  • Excellent knowledge of English (both spoken and written). Fluency in at least one language from the Horn of Africa is desirable.
