Worldwide, China and Chinese companies have been big investors in the energy and power sector over the last decade, with this accounting for almost half of all the money invested overseas. Metals and transportation are also popular investments.

In Britain, the pattern is different- focusing on energy, but also investing heavily in finance, agriculture and real estate. For example, shares are also held in Thames Water, Barclays and the company that produces Weetabix.
