Birds Eye View Film Festival: Celebrating Arab Women Filmmakers [3rd-10th April]

Next week sees the start of the 2013 Film Festival: Celebrating Arab Women Filmmakers along with two special events for International Women’s Week on 7th & 8th March.

It runs from 3-10 April 2013 and takes place at the BFI Southbank, Barbican, ICA & Hackney Picturehouse, Southbank Centre.

The program consists of features, documentaries, short films, events, live music and awards that give factual and fictional perspectives by, and on, Arab women. These include ten exclusive director Q&As, seven UK premiers, two London premieres and two live music world premieres,

Highlights include:

  • Palestinian Annemarie Jacir, whose When I Saw You details life in a 1960s refugee camp
  • Egypt’s Hala Lofty, whose mother-daughter drama Coming Forth By Day has her marked down as an Arab auteur to look out for in the future.
  • Music events, including El Gusto – described as an Algerian Buena Vista Social Club
  • Ernst Lubitsch’s 1920s silent flick One Arabian Night, with a new live score by Amira Kheir.
