About Us

The SOAS Humanitarian Hub is an online forum which aims to foster critical analysis of and bring together different perspectives on humanitarianism, aid and conflict. The Hub is the university’s forum for research, collaboration and information on contemporary developments and debates on humanitarian crisis and response.

Drawing upon SOAS’s tradition for radical scholarship the Hub encourages critical engagement with the politics and power dynamics of humanitarian and development aid, discourse and policy. What are the different ways that humanitarianism can be understood that exist outside of an interventionist framework? How and where is humanitarian aid given, and how does it interact with the political and military complexities of emergency contexts?  How does South-to-South assistance in emergencies change, challenge, or complement the concepts and practice of humanitarianism?

As part of this conversation the Hub seeks to create a space to highlight a variety of voices, coming from within academic, research, policy and community institutions and across geographical divides.
