Dr Claudia Seymour presents new book

Last Wednesday Dr Claudia Seymour presented her new book, “The Myth of International Protection. War and Survival in Congo” as part of the Centre for Migration and Diaspora Studies seminar series. The discussion was led by Prof Laura Hammond, and attended by students and staff from across the Development Studies department.

This book is a sensitively written account of the ubiquitous and unremitting violence experienced by young people in the Democratic Republic of Congo. While Claudia presents a highly critical account of the humanitarian responses given, she also provides practical and plausible ideas about how to engage positively in areas of conflict. The work is of particular interest to our department as Claudia’s book draws extensively on her PhD research, which she carried out when she was studying with us.

The presentation was not recorded, but Claudia was the star of one of the podcasts that were recorded over the summer, so her reflections are available here: https://blogs.soas.ac.uk/humanitarian-hub/2019/07/23/humanitarian-hub-podcast-episode-4/

Claudia welcomes contributions to her blog on transforming violence, which can be found here: https://claudiaseymour.net/blog/
