Dr Suda Perera on Remote Data-Gathering in Conflict Environments
In this video, Dr Suda Perera, Senior Teaching Fellow in Conflict and Migration at SOAS, discusses her recent article: ‘To Boldly Know: Knowledge, Peacekeeping and Remote Data-Gathering in Conflict Affected States’.
Dr Perera’s article covers the growth of remote technologies as a tool for data gathering in conflict affected areas. Modern technologies, such as crowdsourcing and drones, provide information to humanitarian actors, whilst still occupying spaces outside of active conflict. Although such technologies are increasingly popular, Dr Perera discusses how their benefit can be overestimated and how they can, at times, bring about harmful practices.
Focusing on her own work in the DRC, her research has looked to contrast the use of remote technologies against more traditional ethnographic studies. In doing so she is able to explore the differences between the two, and the ways in which remote technologies can provide skewed data, which favours some actors more than others.
