SOAS and FCO offer new Global Diplomacy online programme this autumn
SOAS University of London will be offering a new online programme, MA Global Diplomacy (South Asia), from this autumn. The programme was developed in association with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s (FCO) Diplomatic Academy. It was officially launched at the FCO in Whitehall on 6 June 2016 and will be welcoming its first cohort of students in October 2016.
The programme is being offered as a joint initiative between the Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy (CISD) and the South Asia Institute (SAI) and will bring SOAS’ experience in innovative online learning and excellent international reputation in the fields of Global Diplomacy and South Asian studies together in one programme.
The programme will provide students with an in-depth critical understanding of the nature of South Asian diplomacy and political economy. Some of the subjects students will have access to are diplomacy and security in the region, modern history and the effects of colonization, political economy, religion, caste and gender among others. The programme aims to introduce students to the complexities of the region and provide a sound grounding in diplomatic studies.
The programme is intended to benefit those who are engaged in or embarking on a career in diplomatic or related fields. Student are expected to be from the FCO, other HMG Departments and the general public and they will deepen their understanding of international affairs and contemporary diplomatic practice with a regional focus on South Asia. Head of the FCO’s South Asia Department Laura Clarke said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for colleagues working in the region to deepen further their skills and expertise, and make South Asia and Afghanistan a career anchor. The online delivery makes it particularly attractive for those working in different locations, or fitting their studies around other commitments.”
Dr Deborah Johnston, SOAS Pro-Director for Teaching and Learning, said: “This new course provides an excellent opportunity for those engaged in diplomacy and similar fields to expand their understanding of international affairs in South Asia. By collaborating with the FCO, we are creating a space for the practical application of knowledge at SOAS.
“Online learning enables us to reach a diverse range of students from varied professional backgrounds who can bring their experiences from the field into their studies and group discussions.”

Gentle People: This looks wonderful and It is also my field. I am currently finishing up the course on Global Diplomacy. I also teach Political Science, History of Modern China and History of Japan for SUNY (State University of New York). I have a deep interest in International Relations and have published a book on Japan and one on China. I am now just finishing a book on Korean Unification.
