Thumbing through a back copy of West Africa magazine, as I do from time to time, I accidentally came across a short piece in the February 4, 1939 edition entitled “School of Oriental Studies Changes Title”.

The article states that the name change shows the value placed by the University of London on African studies”.

SOAS Library holds an incomplete set of bound copies of West Africa, located in the Lee Periodical section on level E; the call number is Lee Per 3 /95516. The 1917-1932 issues are available on microfilm, at call number M3773. The weekly magazine, first published in 1917, ceased publication in 2005, and you can view our catalogue entry for the magazine here.
